Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch – prepare yourselves. Some of NZ’s most remarkable classical musicians are bringing their contemporary revival of ensemble music to your cities.
Internationally renowned group, NZTrio are three born and bred kiwis who became Doctorates of Music and have spent over 14 years together creating music as one single seamless unit. NZTrio is recognised as a ‘national treasure’ and ‘New Zealand’s most indispensable ensemble’. Collaborating with some truly stellar artists such as operatic tenor Simon O’Neill and Guzheng player Xia Jing, NZTrio will be bringing their lively concerts throughout the spring months of September through November. Such incredible talent in the intimate venue spaces offer a musical evening like no other.
Internationally renowned musician Xia Jing brings a unique sound to the stage playing guzheng (Chinese Zither/Traditional Chinese Harp) in NZTrio: Fa 发 with Xia Jing in Wellington and the exotic loft series concert GLOW in Auckland. Playing since the age of four, Xia Jing is an incredibly dedicated artist who has performed alongside major orchestras such as the Vienna Philharmonic and the Beijing Symphony Orchestra. See her play in the video below.
The award-winning musician accompanies the trio in Gao Ping’s new composition Feng Zheng (Kite), dedicated to the late, great New Zealand composer Jack Body. The work is inspired by the concept of sending thoughts and wishes into the sky – a perfect accompaniment to the coinciding Harvest Moon Festival that occurs during 15-17 September. The piece will premiere in Wellington alongside three other new commissions for this unique instrumental combination by New Zealanders Dylan Lardelli, Dorothy Ker, and Jeroen Speak.
Acclaimed superstar tenor Simon O’Neill also joins them for FLARE in Kerikeri, Auckland and Christchurch. FLARE sees the musicians take on a wide selection of music for trio and tenor including a new piece from kiwi composer Juliet Palmer along with greats Bach, Mahler and Strauss. Ashburton-born, Helden-tenor O’Neill has an internationally impressive career, performing lead roles with the biggest companies in the world. He is a principal artist with the Metropolitan Opera (New York), the Royal Opera House (London), Teatro alla Scala (Milan) and both the Bayreuth and Salzburg Festivals.
