Your Name continues its box-office romp, smashing records and winning awards!
In our new series, Shawn Moodie goes behind the headlines to discuss the business of entertainment, exploring the latest box office numbers, studio maneuvers, and industry rumors.
The hype train is real people – last week Makoto Shinkai’s smash hit film Your Name passed Studio Ghibli’s Princess Mononoke, and this week it has overtaken the legendary Howl’s Moving Castle!
The film has currently earned $172,165,960 US (¥19.711 billion) and is now the second highest-grossing anime film of all time in Japan. Spirited Away still holds onto the #1 spot but Your Name is closing fast.
Your Name is also on the official consideration list for the Best Animated Feature at the Oscars, so it’s now competing for a spot on the 89th Academy Awards shortlist.
If the film nabs the Oscar, Shinkai can put it next to his other awards for Your Name, such as Best Animated Feature Length Film at Sitges Film Festival 2016, Best Picture (Film) at the 7th Newtype Anime Awards and the Best Animated Feature Special Distinction Prize at the 18th Bucheon International Animation Festival!
Only five Japanese anime films have ever been nominated for an Oscar – Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, The Wind Rises, The Tale of Princess Kaguya, and When Marnie Was There. Unsurprisingly, these are all Ghibli films.
Your Name is in New Zealand cinemas from December 1st.
