Jack Panther releases video for melancholic indie-pop track ‘This Dream’

Wellington indie-pop artist Jack Panther has released the video for his new single ‘This Dream’ – made by award-winning New Zealand film director Charlotte Evans.

Jack Panther – This Dream

Brooding and melancholic, ‘This Dream’ is a deeply personal introspective song, inspired by an intense and vivid dream Panther had about his now ex-partner.

“It was the height of summer and we had only just met. We knew the only way we could continue was to do long distance. The night before we separated to go back to our normal lives, I had a dream that we were married. When the dream ended and I was still half sleep, I picked up my phone, wrote down a couple of keywords before I fell back asleep. It was a strange, mystical dream and I didn’t know how to tell him. Instead of telling him, I wrote this song in the morning sun of my porch.”

The song is accompanied by an aptly dark and moving video, made by Charlotte Evans, who has also worked on music videos for the likes of Aldous Harding, Benee and Marlon Williams.

An ambitious project, which Evans and Panther devised as New Zealand closed its borders as the COVID-19 crisis took hold, the making of the video involved four DOPs from Slovenia, Sydney, Mornington Peninsula and Melbourne.

The concept is based on people around the world being separated from each other with the story centred around a single day in lockdown.

“The music video is a beautiful reflection of the track’s introspective nature – something we’re all feeling at the moment. Charlotte captured the insecurities confessed in the lyrics and showcased them through four different perspectives and cinematic locations,” says Panther.

Jack Panther is a queer indie-pop artist born in Auckland, but now based in Wellington. He blends tones of melancholy with pop and ‘This Dream’ is the first single from his upcoming EP, which he made in the UK with acclaimed producer Ian Barter (Amy Winehouse, Paloma Faith)
