Tim Minchin announces debut studio album apart together, out November 20th
Acclaimed Australian musician Tim Minchin announced the release of his long-awaited debut album, ‘Apart Together’, on The Late Late Show with James Corden. Recorded over the past two years since moving back to Sydney, Minchin confirmed his debut long player will be released globally on Friday November 20, via BMG.
‘Apart Together’ is the third song and the title track of his forthcoming album and is inspired by a story on LA radio station KCRW about an elderly couple in their mobile home who died of hypothermia in each other’s arms. ‘Apart Together’ tenderly teases out the improbable beauty of such an outcome, and frames it in an exquisitely pensive setting.
“From the outset,” said Minchin, “if you enter marriage wholly accepting that it’s a commitment to watching each other decay, theres something far more beautiful in that than the greeting-card depiction of love that it’s overturning.”
These exciting announcements come after Minchin opened and closed the illustrious BAFTAs last month, at which he delivered a “hilariously bleak” (NME) bespoke original song to open proceedings and performed ‘Carry You’ as the finale, the song featured in the critically acclaimed V series Tim developed, wrote, composed, directed and starred; Upright. ‘Carry You’ also appears on ‘Apart Together’.
Tim Minchin is a veritable creative genius; he’s enjoyed worldwide success as a musical theatre composer-lyricist, countless sold-out concerts, as well as being one of the most successful Australian comedians of his generation.
That it has taken Minchin until now to release his “proper” album speaks volumes about the twists an turns his career has taken since he made the 14,500-mile journey to London from Perth in the hope of finding an audience for a kohl-eyed, shock-headed musical comedian.
He has won Best Musical Olivier Awards and Tony Nominations for Matilda and Groundhog Day, as well as a Grammy nomination for the Matilda Broadway Cast Recording. A Member of the Order of Australia for significant service to the performing arts, Minchin sells hundreds of thousands of tickets to live shows in Australia, the UK and the US. He has most recently been seen in Upright, a Foxtel/Sky Atlantic production which he co-wrote, executive produced, starred in and wrote music for.
Minchin’s first single of 2020, ‘Leaving LA’ was added to rotation on Double J, and acclaimed by NME Australia, Music Feeds, The Music and more. His second single was equally well-received’ I’ll Take Lonely Tonight was praised by Rolling Stone, NME Australia, Radio New Zealand, The Music and Scenestr.
The gatefold vinyl features a 24-page booklet with illustrated lyrics, a poster and bespoke artwork. The vinyl disc comes in two variants; translucent red and transparent ultra-clear with opaque red. The album is available for preorder now.
Apart Together is available on all digital platforms. Minchin’s debut album, of the same name is available to pre-order and will be release November 20.
