I like reviewing things but I like drinking alcohol more – and so do my friends – so we’ve decided to combine the two and start reviewing things while on the special sauce. We hope you enjoy our new review series ‘Six Drunk Friends Review’.

Our first attempt at reviewing (ok, more like stringing a coherent sentence together) while building up a massive head of steam, involved us checking out Ashton Brown in ‘Anxious To Meet You’ at the NZ International Comedy Festival Show.  You can read a sober review of the show here.

Shawn
So we just watched Ashton Brown, but we drank lots first. I’m a bottle of red and a half-dozen beers down at this point…  I’m surprised they let us in…

Johanna
I’m surprised they let you in you half-cut mess…

Ben
Snap.

Shawn
I earned that. Ok, back on topic. What did you all think?

Annalise
 I really liked him.

Shuchi
I was thoroughly entertained.

Emily
… I liked that there was a bar in the venue…

Ben
Yeah, the bar was a good touch.

Emily
… I liked the comedian too though!

Shawn
More venues should have bars…

Johanna
Stay on topic.

Shawn
… We drank a lot…

Shuchi
I’m drunk too…

Johanna
You’re not helping Shuchi…

Shawn
… We’ve been drinking for a while…

Ben
Loved the super-dark humor and all the ‘too soon’ stuff, I just love that sense of humor.

Emily
He was really sweaty but also very funny…

Shawn
I’m not sure they’re mutually exclusive?

Shuchi
I thought he had great presence, he’s a really likable guy.

Ben
I’d have a drink with him…

Shawn
I think I saw him in the toilet…

Ben
We should go find Ashton and have a drink now…

Emily
He told his life story and conveyed the message that it’s okay to laugh at yourself. He did it in a way that made me laugh along the way too.

Johanna
Yes yes yes. Solid material, he tackled some brave and personal stuff, particularly around mental health. Used the comedy format to sneak in some stuff that was significantly more serious and played more like slam poetry than stand-up.

Shawn
The format was cool. Really original. The show was actually really impactful for me.

Annalise
The spoken word section was great.

Shawn
I’m pretty sure he’s an actor as well as a comedian. Combined the two bits well.

Johanna
The format and presentation needed a bit of work, it didn’t quite hang together as a single piece. It seemed like maybe he hadn’t done a show in this format before, and he was a little unsure what to do with the format.
Shawn
That’s a little rough, it worked for me…

Shuchi
The show was a bit rough around the edges, but he’s so damn likable that it didn’t matter.

Ben
It was super low-fidelity, but that works for the personal style of show that it was.

Annalise
I liked how it was quite raw.

Shawn
Speaking of raw, it really hit me in the feels in the second half, but maybe that’s just ‘cus I’ve been drinking?

Ben
Nah, I teared up a bit…

Shuchi
It was impossible not to be touched by it!

Emily
Yeah

Annalise
It was a very serious topic.

Emily
The mental health part?

Ben
Really brutal at times but it was good and funny and I think those topics are only ever going to be uncomfortable so I think he did a good job.

Shawn
Yeah, it was really… what’s the word… brave. Glad he went there. We need to talk about that sort of stuff.

Ben
Ashton seemed genuine which is the only way anyone will ever listen to the messages he’s sending…

Shuchi
He tackled it with warmth and humility…

Emily
Yep!

Shuchi
… and took us into such a dark, uncomfortable place… but then back up to a place where we all left smiling and happy with the world again.

Shawn
I felt pretty happy at the end…

Johanna
He called me a national voter… and I’m still processing that…

Shawn
Haha that was hilarious, though it made me spill my drink…

Johanna
Having his parents in the show and in the audience was really great… Is that a thing now?

Emily
What, having your parents watch the show?

Johanna
No, having them appear in the videos… Guy Williams dad appears in his comedy…

Shawn
Ok ok, I want to get another drink so let’s just end with, it was a good show. I liked it, you’ll probably like it. Go watch it.
