It’s no secret that oysters and wine are our two favourite summer treats, and where better to enjoy them than Matakana, a region famous for both?

Now in its third year, Oyster Festival Matakana promises to be a shucking great day out on Sunday 6 October, kicks off the shucking season with a selection of Mahurangi’s finest.

With Mahurangi Harbour being the birthplace of oyster farming in New Zealand – the movers and shuckers behind the slippery delicacies will be face to face with foodies for a day of fanatical feasting, shucking and serving their plump and delicious oysters au naturel, paired with local wines for a mouth-watering experience.

For those not already in the know, the Mahurangi season offers up a plump, creamy and less salty tasting oyster than that of other varietals – a firm favourite of oyster veterans and newbies alike.

Even if you’re not a fan of these salty beauties, there will be other seafood and cuisine available to satisfy your taste buds with everyone from Sawmill Brewery to Double Dutch Fries joining in the fun!

This all-weather event will entertain the whole family with live music, a foodie demonstration tent, kids entertainment and of course, shucking competitions – let the oyster battle begin!

Whether you’re a profesh or simply ‘pro-fresh’, this kid-friendly event will bring feasters face to face with the best shuckers behind the decadent delicacies. With food and entertainment options for tots to fullfledged foodies, it’s a no brainer way to spend a spring Sunday.

So shuck it, and round up all your seafood-lovers for a festival not to be missed! Hurry tickets are limited.
